Two Important Events: CarFit at SUNY Downstate and Project Safe Surrender in Bed-Stuy

  • CarFit (4/10/11): This Sunday, SUNY Downstate will host an event for seniors called CarFit between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the SUNY Downstate parking lot (324 Winthrop Street, between Nostrand and New York Avenues). According to the press release for the event, “CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles ‘fit’ them. It also provides information on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers and increase their mobility.” Professionals and students associated with the Occupational Therapy Department at Downstate’s College of Health Related Professions will be on hand to assist. It should take about twenty minutes for each person’s CarFit check.
  • Project SafeSurrender (4/22–4/23/11): The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, working in concert with other groups, will sponsor an event called Project SafeSurrender at the Antioch Baptist Church (828 Greene Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant) on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A judge, defense attorneys, and members of the clergy will work with people to resolve many kinds of outstanding summons or warrants, including unlawful possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol in public, littering, riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, animal nuisance, and disorderly conduct. According to the project's webpage, this is an opportunity for individuals with warrants/summons to turn themselves in to clergy and law enforcement and to have their warrants/summons lifted and their cases adjudicated in a safe environment. This is not a pardon; but rather a solution that is favorable.
